In October 2016 the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds published a book "The Birds of the Polish Carpathians - status, threats, conservation". The publication summarises a several-year research conducted within the project called "The Birds of the Carpathians".

"The Birds of the Polish Carpathians - status, threats, conservation" is a comprehensive monograph on the breeding avifauna of the Polish Carpathians, which is a summary of the project "Survey of the key bird species of the Polish Carpathian Mountains and creating the system of their monitoring and protection" ("The Birds of the Carpathians") carried out by the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds (OTOP). A rich set of data collected during the inventory of birds conducted by OTOP from 2011 to 2015 is complemented with information supplied by volunteers, institutions and organisations involved in the study of birds. All this work led to the creation of a monograph presenting the current state of knowledge about the birds of the Polish Carpathians - a region which plays a very important role in the protection of avifauna not only in Poland.

The results of the inventory of the birds of the Carpathians are presented in several ways. First, there is the data on the most important groups - birds of forest, rivers, high mountains, owls and birds of prey. This part presents the species diversity within the groups and the range of distribution of particular species.

The section devoted to the characteristics of the key species of the birds of the Polish Carpathians focuses on 37 rare and endangered species. It shows, among others, their current distribution, abundance and density, as well as habitat requirements. Adopting the Carpathian perspective, the authors analysed the most significant threats and proposed some protective measures which should be taken.

The final chapters present an overall analysis of the role of the Polish Carpathian region in the protection of the national avifauna. The factors which put different groups of birds under threat are presented synthetically and focus primarily on habitat requirements. The book enumerates the urgent protective measures which should be taken as a response to the current environmental problems in the region.

We hope that the results of the project "The Birds of the Carpathians" summarised in the book in an comprehensible way will contribute to a more effective protection of birds and their habitats in the region of the Polish Carpathians. The book "The Birds of the Polish Carpathians - status, threats, conservation" is available in the electronic version. Its summary has been translated into English.
